Special Report: Wine packaging

Glass has always played a dominant role in alcoholic drinks, with beer and wine making up 90% of global glass bottle volumes in 2012 sold through the retail channel. In the wine category, the traditional quality nature of glass has remained an asset. To date, a number of niche packaging types have failed to make an impact in wine, but with improvements in technology and changing consumer habits and perception, glass is increasingly being challenged.

In volume terms, the global wine industry amounted to 21 billion units of glass bottles in 2012. Still light grape wine (red, white and rosé) makes up a significant 72% of this volume with, also true for sparkling wine, the majority still being consumed amongst “old world” wine producing countries. Non-grape wine in glass, in particular rice-based varieties, is by contrast most prominent in Asia Pacific.

The OIV publishes the new version of the list of varieties

Thanks to the contributions of the Organisation’s Member States, this publication contains a total of 35 official national lists, equating to 6.154 registrations.

After deleting the registrations common to different countries (for example, there are 31 countries that use Merlot N), this leaves 4,020 names of different vine varieties. Of these, several varieties are repeated with different names or spellings, in order to respect the specific characteristics of each Member Country.

The OIV is continuing its work so that additions to this list may be proposed in the near future. These may include, for example, specifying the use of vine varieties, separating clones in another list, noting the species to which each vine variety belongs, and finally, regrouping varieties which are identical on a genetic level under the same international code.

Red wine – what’s behind its healthy reputation?

In recent years, red wine has received some pretty good press. When we think of a healthy form of alcohol, red wine tends to be the top choice.

But why – and does it deserve all the attention?

Scientists agree that there is something in red wine that, when drunk in moderation, can help to protect the heart, reduce ‘bad’ cholesterol and prevent blood clots.

Will China ever be a superpower?

When the European Union raised tariffs on Chinese solar panels earlier this year, China said it would investigate complaints from Chinese wine producers about the “dumping” of European wine on the Chinese market. Polish government approves draft of amendment to the law on the production and bottling of wine

On August 27th the Polish government approved the draft of amendment to the law on the production and bottling of wine. The new law should lead to the following improvements:

- allow winemakers producing wine from their own grapes to outsource the bottling of the wine (this is forbidden at the moment);

- reduce the scope of information required to be registered as a winemaker producing wine from own grapes;

- clarify rules on declarations submitted by winemakers concerning the estimated amount of used grape or grape musts;

- extend the deadline for submission of the application to entry the register of wine producers;

-  lead to changes in the certification of wine from a specific grape variety or a particular vintage.

The above-mentioned changes represent a first step towards the simplification of procedures for small Polish winemakers producing wine exclusively from their own grapes. However, the need for further simplification of procedures for wine production remains in Poland tremendous. The complicated registration procedures winemakers have to go through are one of the main factor hindering the production of wine on a larger scale in the country.
